Her writing is powerful and heartbreaking and often hilarious.  And her work helped open my heart and my mind.

I was reading her book when the news broke about the deaths of Mike Brown and John Crawford.  I probably would have spent a lot of time crying anyway, but the essay on Fruitvale Station was especially devastating.

What happened to Oscar Grant will always be devastating. When is this going to stop?
